It is past time for us to organize around results for all students. We have had answers for decades and have ignored them. Schools continue to prepare our students for a past that no longer exists. We have ignored the research, and we have ignored the future our students will face when they leave school. We must shed the archaic, Industrial Age assumptions and structures that are preventing sustainable reforms.
We have titled this book Crimes Against Learning because students are held captive in school for thirteen years. They have little choice in setting the expectations adults have of them. They have little choice in the education opportunities they receive. Students are victims of a system that may not prepare them for a life of economic self-sufficiency. And, they have no means of escape.
Given the results, far too many students are being channeled into a life of poverty and disappointment. In the end, the vast majority of students are either victims or survivors of the schools they attend. Is it not a crime of negligence or even a crime of intent if we know what we can do to ensure that all students succeed, but we don’t act?

Stop preparing our students for a world that no longer exists. This book takes a quick look into the problems that continue to exist in our traditional educational system and how it is affecting the lack of success for our students.
As an educator, it has been disheartening to see decline in respect and trust of the teaching profession. Also, the sense of hopelessness is crushing. This book gives me hope, however, that educators can regain their place in the social structure. Education can once again be a priority in our society. Educators can be empowered to deliver effective and essential learning to our students. This is a MUST read for educators everywhere.
Crimes Against Learning is a must read resource for educators at all levels. As a former teacher in private and public schools, I have witnessed how school reforms such as No Child Left Behind and the current Race to the Top with its Common Core curriculum have been touted as the latest innovation to make students be more academically competent in the national and international market place. That's fine, I thought, provide us with new curriculum, new standards, and training, but what about changing the rigid bell schedule and how classes are structured. I was pleasantly surprised that the authors addressed my concerns in their proposed open system paradigm. This book clearly outlines what is required of superintendents, administrators, teachers, and support staff to effect a paradigm shift from a closed system to an open system that will provide all students the opportunity to be successful in school. It's going to take a lot of hard work and cooperation of all stakeholders to make the necessary changes and the authors provide solid examples of how their methods have worked in some individual schools and school districts.
A well written account of why schools fail. As a former school board member and school site chair, I now understand why I was so frustrated with the progress being made in the school district, and my ability to affect change. This book is logically presented and is easy to follow.
Educational change is very hard to make because administrators are so entrenched in thy old closed system and just end up chasing the money.
This book is a great road map for change! It is not for the faint of heart because to truly make the changes necessary requires commitment and determination. This is a great read and I encourage your reading it if you really want educational change. Kit Marshal and her team do a great job in laying out the case and method for making the necessary changes. It is well worth the read !
